Although biometric identification isn’t new, the September 11, 2001 attacks did change people’s attitudes toward its use in three ways. First, the event dramatically lowered the general public’s resistance to technology previously viewed as invasive. Second, biometric identification was given a legislative green light, and third, the imperative to create standards and new technologies paved the way for a massive infusion of government funding.
