Integrating Okta and Pager Duty
PagerDuty is an incident management and alerting platform. It centralizes monitoring alerts, on-call schedules, and escalations, ensuring that the right people are notified in real-time when issues occur. Think of it as the nervous system that routes critical alerts to engineers, security teams, or support staff.
Okta is an Identity & Access Management (IAM) platform. It’s a “front door” to business applications, managing user authentication, authorization, lifecycle management, and security policies.
Why Integrate PagerDuty with Okta?
Integration creates a bridge between identity security and incident response.
- Faster Response to Identity Threats
- If Okta detects suspicious login attempts, mass lockouts, or policy violations, PagerDuty can trigger an immediate alert to the on-call IAM/security engineer.
- Automated Escalations
- Instead of relying on email alerts, PagerDuty ensures incidents like compromised accounts or Okta service outages escalate properly (e.g., primary on-call → backup → IAM Manager → SOC).
- Unified Incident Management
- Okta integrates directly with PagerDuty’s incident response workflows, ensuring IAM issues are handled with the same rigor as infrastructure or app outages.
- Business Continuity & Compliance
- Reduces Mean Time To Resolution (MTTR) for identity incidents.
- Demonstrates strong governance and auditability for regulators.
Below screenshot for the initial integration for Okta and Pager Duty. You can find details in the official guide -Integrate PagerDuty with Okta: https://help.okta.com/oie/en-us/content/topics/provisioning/pagerduty/pagerduty-integrate.htm
- Login to the admin console and add the integration for Pager Duryt

2. Complete the Application Label and base URL and click Next.

3. Leave the default values and click next. We can configure SSO later.

4. Okta will complete the application creation.
Now, to integrate or enable the identity lifecycle management, we need to enable the SCIM configuration for the PagerDuty application. Click in the Provisioning tab and select Integration.

5. Before continuing in Okta, go to your Pager Duty instance and create an API token to use during the Okta integration configuration.

6. Copy the value of the generated API Token in PagerDuty. This value will be used during the Okta integration app.

7. Go back to your Okta Instance and select the PagerDuty > Integration > Configure API Integration.
Put the API token values collected in PagerDuty and the Admin User Name for your PagerDuty instance. Click the “Test API Credentials” button to verify that the connection is working.

8. Now click the Import Now button to start pulling users from Pager Duty. Once completed you will get a window reporting the objects scanned.

9. You can now verify the iported users and proceed with a correlation with their Okta Universal Directory entry.
